Built around 1900, the Perkins Cottage was the long-time home of Helen Perkins, from whose estate the current owners purchased it fifteen years ago. Preserving its distinctive Victorian features—like the decorative exterior shingles—they have brought it back to life and modernized it. Over the years they have renovated the baths with granite countertops, and created a new kitchen with new appliances and ceramic-tile countertops. An old laundry porch was converted to a three-season room with ample crank-out windows overlooking the lawn, with fields in the distance rolling down to the Bagaduce River. The front windows offer glimpses of the River and the village of Castine in the distance. Facing west, the house offers magnificent sunsets.
Privately-situated on quiet Ferry Rd., the Perkins Cottage offers plenty of opportunities for long walks down to the Old Ferry Landing on the Bagaduce (owned by the Land Trust of Penobscot, Castine and Brooksville), or down Wharf Road to the river from where a view across the water to Castine can be enjoyed. Within walking distance is the Tinder Hearth artisan bakery where fresh-baked bread is available Tuesdays and Fridays, and pizza is also served on Tuesday evenings. Bucks Harbor is a ten-minute drive; there you will find a grocery store with local meat, cheese, fish and produce, as well as the acclaimed Buck’s Restaurant.
Within twenty minutes are both the village of Blue Hill, and Deer Isle—where you will find the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts as well as numerous shops, restaurants, and galleries. Both the Village of Stonington on Deer Isle and Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island are within an hour’s drive and offer many opportunities for hiking, kayaking, climbing and boating.
